Abstract:
The primary objectives of the INTIFANTE99 experiment, which took place in July 1999 near the Setubal canyon and off Cape Sines, were the generation of internal tides and underwater communications. In order to reach the proposed goals the experiment was divided in two phases. This work refers only to the first phase of the experiment, focusing in detail the propagation characteristics of this type of waves and their generation periods. Non-linear internal waves were observed using towed and moored instrumentation, the dominant characteristics were estimated and the generation mechanisms will be discussed
